Understanding Fish Mounts
Each of our mounts is designed to last, thanks to automotive-grade paints and a polyurethane finish, ensuring durability both indoors and outdoors.
Pose Variations
It’s important to note that all of our fish mounts are cast from real fish, which means the pose of each mount will vary depending on the length of the fish. Every mount is unique, ensuring that no two fish mounts will look exactly the same.

Half Fish Mount (Half-Sided Fish Mount)
A half fish mount, also known as a half-sided fish mount, is a cost-effective option that provides a detailed view of one side of the fish. The back of the mount is concave and unpainted, as it is designed to lie flush against the wall. These mounts typically feature a wire or fiberglass backing that allows them to hang securely. Half mounts are not only budget-friendly but are also ideal for fish that are naturally flat, such as stingrays, which makes a full mount unnecessary. This style of mount is great for wall décor and showcases the fish’s profile in great detail, without the need for additional painting on the backside.

Full Fish Mount (Double-Sided Fish Mount or 3/4 Mounts)
A full fish mount, also known as a double-sided fish mount or 3/4 mount, is designed to give a three-dimensional appearance when hung on a wall. While the front side of the fish is fully painted with intricate detail, the back is only minimally painted where it is not meant for viewing. The mount is designed with a metal bracket or hanger, making it easy to hang on a wall. Full mounts allow for a more realistic display, where both sides of the fish's face and body are visible. These mounts are ideal for wall display and maintain a more robust appearance compared to half mounts because of their more complete, three-dimensional view of the fish.

360° Fish Mount (3D Fish Mount)
A 360° fish mount, also known as a 3D fish mount, offers a completely immersive view of the fish from all sides. These mounts are designed to be seen from any angle and are ideal for display on pedestals, tables, or suspended from ceilings using eye bolts. Unlike other mount types, 360° mounts are fully painted all the way around, ensuring there are no unpainted surfaces, making it perfect for an open-space display. They are often mounted on pedestals with driftwood or other natural elements underneath, enhancing the artistic presentation.

Fiberglass vs. Traditional Fish Taxidermy
Traditional live skin taxidermy involves using the actual skin of the fish, which is preserved and mounted. However, this method can degrade over time and requires meticulous care.
Our fiberglass fish mounts offer several advantages over traditional taxidermy:
-
Durability: Fiberglass mounts are resistant to cracking, fading, and damage, making them long-lasting.
-
Catch and Release: With fiberglass, anglers can catch and release the fish while still having a replica made based on measurements and photos.
-
Eco-Friendly: Fiberglass mounts reduce the need to harvest fish for taxidermy, helping preserve fish populations.
-
Maintenance: They are easier to clean and maintain, as they are less susceptible to pests and environmental damage.

Why Choose Florida Fish Mounts?
-
Unmatched Craftsmanship: Every mount is hand-painted by Greg Cassell using high-quality materials and advanced techniques.
-
First-Generation Molds: We work with the best molds to capture every detail of your fish.
-
Eco-Friendly: Fiberglass taxidermy supports catch and release, contributing to sustainable fishing.
-
Made in the USA: We proudly source most of our materials from Florida and ensure that each mount is American-made.

About Fish Taxidermy:
Live Skin Mounting & Fiberglass Replications
by Florida Fish Mounts

Historical Differences
Historically, fish taxidermy involved using the actual skin of the caught fish. This method, known as traditional skin mounting, required extensive preservation techniques to prevent decay, including tanning the skin and sometimes using preservatives. While effective, these methods were labor-intensive and often resulted in mounts that could degrade over time.

In contrast, modern fiberglass taxidermy, which gained popularity in the late 20th century, uses molds created from actual fish. These molds are then used to produce fiberglass replicas. This method preserves the exact size, shape, and details of the fish without using its skin, leading to more durable and long-lasting mounts.

Benefits of Fiberglass Taxidermy
1. Durability: Fiberglass mounts are more durable than traditional skin mounts. They are resistant to cracking, fading, and deterioration, which ensures a longer lifespan.
2. Detail and Realism: Advances in molding and painting techniques allow for highly detailed and realistic replicas that can capture the unique characteristics of the fish.
3. Catch and Release: Fiberglass mounts support the practice of catch and release. Anglers can take measurements and photographs of their catch and release the fish back into the water, contributing to conservation efforts.
4. Eco-Friendly: This method reduces the need to harvest fish solely for mounting purposes, helping to maintain fish populations and ecosystems.
5. Maintenance: Fiberglass mounts require less maintenance compared to traditional mounts. They are easier to clean and less susceptible to damage from humidity and pests.

Pricing
The cost of fiberglass fish mounts can vary based on several factors, including size, species, and the level of detail required. On average, fiberglass mounts range from $10 to $25 per inch of fish length. Customizations, such as unique poses or additional habitat displays, can increase the price. While this might be higher than some traditional skin mounts, the longevity and conservation benefits often justify the expense for many anglers.

Ecological Impact and Conservation
The shift to fiberglass taxidermy aligns with modern conservation efforts. Overfishing and habitat destruction have significantly impacted fish populations worldwide. By promoting catch and release, anglers contribute to the sustainability of fish species. This practice not only helps maintain ecological balance but also ensures that future generations can enjoy sport fishing.

Moreover, the production of fiberglass mounts does not involve harmful chemicals that were historically used in skin mounting processes. This further reduces the environmental footprint of the taxidermy industry.
