The Deepwater Apex Predator
The Lake Trout is the undisputed king of North America's deepest, coldest glacial lakes. Known to anglers as the "Mackinaw," this massive salmonid is a test of both gear and grit. Whether you hauled a trophy from the depths of the Great Lakes or a remote Canadian outpost, a 50-inch specimen is a milestone that deserves more than a fading photograph. Florida Fish Mounts, based in Cocoa, Florida, is the shop of artist Greg Cassell. We specialize in custom-painted fiberglass Lake Trout replicas that turn your deepwater catch into premium lodge décor.
The Modern Solution: Eat Your Catch and Mount It Too
The greatest advantage of a fiberglass replica is that it allows you to enjoy the prize twice: once at the dinner table and forever on your wall. Lake Trout are highly regarded for their rich, firm fillets. With a fiberglass mount, you can keep your catch for the smoker or the grill without sacrificing the trophy. Furthermore, traditional skin mounts are a poor choice for Lake Trout. Because they are deepwater salmonids, their skin contains high levels of natural oils. Over time, skin mounts are prone to "grease bleed," where oils seep through the paint, leading to yellowing, shrinking, and permanent loss of detail. Greg solves this by utilizing professional-grade fiberglass blanks. This ensures your trophy remains an archival piece of art that never degrades.
Anatomical Accuracy: Morphology and Vermiculations
A true Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush) is distinguished by its deeply forked tail and its intricate light-colored spots and "vermiculations" (worm-like markings) across a dark olive or grey background. Because Lake Trout morphology varies wildly depending on the depth and forage of their home waters, Greg treats every mount as a specific biological project. He meticulously hand-paints the specific spot density and the translucent fin details to ensure top-tier accuracy. We offer these custom builds in a wide range of sizes from 19 to 50 inches.
Custom Pattern Matching (Optional)
While Greg offers custom pattern matching at no additional cost, a photo is not a requirement for your build. If you do not have a photo of your fish, Greg will hand-paint your replica to a traditional, vibrant color phase of a trophy Lake Trout. If you do have a photo you would like him to use as a roadmap to match your specific catch, simply upload it during the checkout process.
The Final Approval Process
Your satisfaction is our priority. Once Greg completes the hand-painting of your replica, we will email you high-resolution photos for your final review. We do not apply the protective clear coat or begin the crating process until you have reviewed the photos and provided your explicit approval of the paintwork. This ensures the colors and patterns meet your expectations before the mount is finalized.
Shipping & Final Invoicing
Please note that shipping is calculated and billed separately from your initial order. Because each fish mount varies in size and weight, especially with trophy units reaching up to 50 inches, we do not provide a flat-rate shipping cost at checkout. Once your approved mount is professionally packaged in a custom-built crate, we determine the final shipping dimensions. At that time, we will send a separate invoice for the shipping balance. Your replica will ship via UPS Ground immediately upon payment of the shipping invoice.
