The Sloped-Headed Cow Dolphin
The Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) is legendary for its explosive jumps and vivid open-ocean colors. While mature males are known as bulls, female mahi mahi are called cows and are prized by offshore anglers across Florida and pelagic waters worldwide. Anglers often refer to them as cow dolphin, cow mahi, or simply dolphin fish. To clarify a common search question, a cow dolphin fish mount replica is entirely distinct from a marine mammal. Florida Fish Mounts builds custom mahi cow replica mounts to honor your catch. Every cow mahi fish mount is individually hand-crafted in our workshop to turn your offshore victory into lasting lodge décor.
Anatomical Accuracy: First-Generation Molds
Every Mahi Cow replica is cast from a first-generation mold taken directly from an actual specimen. This process ensures the deep-forked tail, sleek body taper, and fine scale definition are anatomically correct. Greg Cassell avoids generic retail blanks, utilizing hand-sculpted mouth structures and hand-painted glass eyes set into the mold with high-strength sculpting epoxy to capture a lifelike, aggressive presence.
Cow vs. Bull Profiles and Live Color Fading
Choosing between a cow mahi and a bull mahi comes down to profile shape. A female cow dolphin features a smooth, gracefully sloped forehead, contrasting sharply with the steep, blunt forehead of a bull dolphin. This page is dedicated exclusively to the sloped-profile Cow Mahi. Beyond the head shape, capturing a mahi's true look is challenging because their brilliant greens, electric blues, and gold hues fade to a dull yellow-grey within minutes of coming over the rail. Greg Cassell hand-paints your replica to recreate the lit-up, vivid colors you witnessed in the water rather than the washed-out tones of a dead fish.
Have Your Mount and Eat It Too
Mahi Mahi are among the finest eating fish in the ocean. Choosing a fiberglass replica means you do not have to choose between a trophy on the wall and dinner on the grill. There is no fish required in our workshop to create your mount. Simply snap a few clear photos of your catch on the boat and enjoy your fresh fillets. Traditional skin mounts of mahi mahi fail quickly due to thin skin and oil breakdown, leading to grease bleed, skin shrinkage, and yellowing over time. Our fiberglass construction completely eliminates organic decay, sealing Greg's artwork under a protective UV-resistant urethane clear coat for permanent display indoors or outdoors.
Custom Pattern Matching and the Approval Process
Custom pattern matching from your catch photo is included automatically at no extra charge. You can upload your reference photo using the button below before or after placing your order. Greg will study your image to replicate specific blue lateral spots, unique gold striping, or fin details. If you do not have a photo, Greg will paint your replica in a classic, vibrant ocean-phase cow mahi pattern. Once painting is complete, we email you high-resolution photos of the raw paintwork. We never apply the final clear coat or crate your order until you have reviewed the photos and given your explicit approval.
Shipping and Final Invoicing
Shipping costs are calculated and billed separately once your mount is completed and crated. Because custom fish mounts vary in size and weight, flat-rate shipping is not calculated at checkout. After you approve your final paintwork photos, your mount is secured inside a custom wooden crate, and we issue a separate invoice for actual UPS Ground shipping. Your mount ships immediately upon payment of that invoice. You can check our current shop turnaround timeline at any time by clicking the production time link in our website footer.
